Ko’olauloa eats

June 26th, 2008 by Caryn

I have decided that this blog needs more food in it. We have some great places to eat out here in Ko’olauloa, and they deserve props for making sure we are all well-fed. It helps that I’m hungry right now.

The plan is to check out a different place and feature it in this space each week. Any suggestions? Historically, the moku of Ko’olauloa spans from Ka’a'awa to Waimea. That’s huge!! It will take me years to get through all the great food places in those boundaries.

New places I’m thinking about checking out: the reopened Crouching Lion Inn (maybe I can find a *date* to finance that one? hehe), the Thai lunchwagon in Hau’ula, and one of the Kahuku shrimp trucks (since I’ve never tried any–sad, yeah?).

This weekend? I’m thinking comfort food: Papa Ole’s? Hukilau Cafe? I could go for a nice, filling Saturday brunch…

I vote for Kahuku shrimp! Would you believe there’s a Japanese yakitori restaurant in town that serves Kahuku shrimp on a skewer?!?! And this is not a local-type place either - these guys are FROM Japan and they speak mostly Japanese. Either way, my parents really like it.

I remember eating at the Crouching Lion restaurant once during high school (no mo money) and was sad to hear that it was closing. Now that it has reopened my vote is for you to try this one out and let us know. Cat Toth likes to take plenty pictures of the restaurants she goes to so maybe you can do the same. As for me, since I don’t live Koolauloa any more, my favorite spot is Ted’s Bakery, not just for the glazed donuts, breakfast sandwiches and cream danishes but for the awesome burger. No veggies, lots of cheese and they bake their own bun and use real meat. Looks like I will be taking a drive to the North Shore this weekend!

I could go for ANYTHING from ted’s bakery right about now, BUT Kahuku shrimp IS onolicious :) go try um!

  4. hukilau:

Maybe you should go and try the subway down hauula/kaawa side, since Laie subway is “closed” due to water damage- whatever that means :)

    Aloha Caryn!
Thrilled that I just stumbled across this blog! I love Hukilau Cafe for breakfast, Haleiwa Eats for lunch(wait, that’s not in Ko’olau is it?) and also the Farmer’s Market at Sunset has some tasty items (handmade burritos, thai food truck). Love the seafood salad at Leilei’s. Let’s not forget Ulu Rama’s roti!

I would love to know you’re eating experience at that Korean restaurant in Hau’ula by Masa’s as well as that lighted restaurant (don’t know the name) on the way from Laie to Kaawaa!!

  6. Maile:

You should also check out Uncle Bobo’s in Ka’a'awa. It has some great BBQ pork and chicken.

  7. Caryn:

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I will definitely try them all out–Maile: I have been wanting to stop and try Uncle Bobo’s forever! Somehow I am always too busy…thank goodness for this blog, now I have an excuse! ;)
