Scarers and scarees wanted

October 1st, 2008 by Caryn

...at Gunstock Ranch's HAUNTED HAYRIDE!!

For the past several years, Gunstock Ranch has offered something a little creepier than the Laie School Haunted House (which is perfectly appropriate for little kids, but yawn-inducing for teens): a 'haunted' hayride through winding, pitch-black paths in the foothills mauka of Malaekahana.

Ranch Manager Kyndra Smith is looking for volunteer 'scarers' to hide in the bushes (and trees) along the path, jumping out at just the right moment. I was actually one of these 'scarers' last year, and had a great time. This is what I looked like to the hayriders:

And this is what I looked like in real life:

Pretty scary, huh?

Anyway, we had a great time waiting for each truckload of sometimes-scared, sometimes not-so-scared thrill seekers (see right).

Of course, all of the 'tough guys' (and girls!) claimed that they weren't scared...but I promise, I was extremely terrifying that night. ;)

One of the cool parts about being up at the Ranch is that it's far enough inland that you can't hear the ocean--a rare sensation that you don't often get along the Ko'olauloa coast. The utter silence and pitch blackness up there makes it the perfect spot for a scary ride in the dark.

While we  waited between groups, we practiced our scare tactics:

All in all, it was a ton of fun. This year, the Haunted Hayride takes place nightly October 27-31 from 7-10 p.m. at Gunstock Ranch, 56-250 Kamehameha Highway (turn-in along Kahuku Stretch). If you're interested in being a scarer, call Kyndra Smith at 293-2026 to let her know which night you'd like to come.

Who knows, maybe you'll get the scare of your life when I jump out of the dark at you...

Sounds like fun! I wanted to volunteer last year, but got too busy with school. I'm glad you enjoyed scaring people... good luck this year! :)

Gunstock has a haunted hayride? And Laie School had a haunted house? Where have I been? Probably Utah. Sounds like so much fun. Hmmmm, I miss home.

Ah... I remember that night. Dropping a spider on unsuspecting guests. Watching as guys jumped down from trees. That night was totally awesome and fun.
