Best sushi on the road
November 18th, 2009 by CarynWhen you live out in the country, it's a long drive on a single lane highway to find civilization--and all that driving is hungry work!
So I give you our favorite place to stop on the way home from Kaneohe: Waikane Store.

This dilapidated little store looks like it has been around for over 100 years (because it HAS been around for that long--since 1898). The sign out front looks like it might crumble at a touch and the ATM machine inside is more finicky than HRI trying to decide on a housing project. But BOY can those aunties make some good, stick to your ribs home cookin'.
Our favorite? The sushi. Nothing fancy, basically just rice, tuna, carrot, and egg rolled in sturdy nori. My husband and I can blissfully down four rolls without breaking a sweat by the time we hit Ka'a'awa Elementary.

Make sure you also try the fried chicken, shrimp, and boiled peanuts, all made in small batches throughout the day so you're guaranteed a fresh serving. Oh, and don't forget to sample the homemade cookies. Winnahz, I tell you.

Nothing like Mom and Pop homemade sushi. Sushi is simple. It takes good rice and the heart that one goes into making it.
Ever ate sushi roll without cutting it? Just eating it? Like holding a foot long sub sandwich. When I eat alone, who cares about manners.
Good to know where I can get sushi next time I am on Oahu. Thanks.
Sounds like you drove back in time to get good sushi.
